Wildlife Refuge urges boaters to do their part in helping migrating birds
ONALASKA, Wis. (WXOW) - The Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is asking boaters to do their part in helping migrating birds.
The Mississippi River serves as an important rest stop for migrating water fowl. So the refuge is designating certain areas of the river as voluntary avoidance areas so the waterfowl can avoid any unnecessary disturbances while they rest for their big journey south.
The areas are marked by white and orange buoys.
"The reason that the ducks love it so much around here is because they have a food source", says Hallie Schulz, visitor services manager for the wildlife refuge. "Think of it as their favorite restaurant. They've got all the food that they need, and it's the right conditions for them."
The avoidance areas go into effect on October 15 and will remain there until the end of duck season.
