More UK Veterans to Get Nuclear Service Medal

More veterans who assisted the United Kingdom and the United States in developing the bomb will now be honored with metallic awards as the eligibility criteria have been broadened to include British veterans who contributed to the US atmospheric nuclear test program making them eligible, for the Nuclear Test Medal.

The government has announced that additional veterans who assisted in the development of the bomb for Britain and the US will be honored with a medal, for their contributions.

The eligibility requirements for the Nuclear Test Medal have been broadened to include veterans who contributed to the US nuclear test program for recognition, with a commemorative medal.

Following a pressing directive from Defense Secretary John Healey the review is revisiting the criteria for the Nuclear Test Medal showing a commitment, from this government to support our service members faithfully.

Minister Al Carnes honored Squadron Leader Peters with the medal based on the updated standards at the veterans residence, in Lakenheath yesterday in Suffolk.

In 1954 Squadron Leader Peters joined his RAF colleagues in trials where they conducted high altitude air sampling missions, aboard his Canberra aircraft to collect crucial data.

Minister Al Carnes, who oversees veterans and individuals remarked;

The contribution of the nuclear test veterans who participated in the UKs tests has been instrumental, in establishing the security and safety standards that continue to benefit our society to this day.

The updated standards will now encompass individuals who collaborated with our partner nation. The United States. Throughout that era of progress and exploration.

Today was a moment as I had the privilege of presenting Squadron Leader Peters with a medal in recognition of his valuable role in the nuclear program and his outstanding service that earned him the Air Force Cross during his time, as an RAF Canberra pilot.

Thanks to the approved changes, by His Majesty The King. individuals who were directly involved in the atmospheric tests can now receive a Nuclear Test Medal for the first time.

The Nuclear Test Medal was established around two years back to honor. Remember individuals, from the UK and other countries who played a direct role in creating the UKs independent nuclear weapons arsenal during the atmospheric testing phase in the 1950s.

To 5 000 veterans and their families have received medals up, to this point.

The Government is urging veterans and their families who participated in the atmospheric tests in the 1950 to submit their applications, for the medal here.
