O'Neill urged to intervene as Co Tyrone man detained in Dubai over online review
Detained in Dubai reported that Craig Ballentine was taken into custody under the cybercrime regulations in the UAE, around three weeks ago.
Northern Irelands First Minister Michelle O'Neill is being asked to step in following the arrest of a man in Co Tyrone in the UAE, for sharing a review.
Craig Ballentine of Cookstown was taken into custody three weeks ago upon his arrival in Abu Dhabi, for a visit to see some friends and then transferred to Dubai.
Campaign organization Detained in Dubai has reported that Mr Ballentine is at risk of imprisonment due to the cybercrime regulations, in the UAE.
Radha Stirling, a representative, from the organization mentioned that the regulations prevent individuals from posting comments online.
Ms Stirling mentioned that the scenario occurred following Mr Ballentines stint as a dog groomer, in Dubai for half a year.
He posted a review of the grooming center and shared his negative experience after facing challenges at work.
Ms Stirling mentioned that local lawyers have informed Craig that the likelihood of the case, against him being dismissed is extremely low.
The new cybercrime regulations in the UAE have become a source of concern for expatriates as a mere complaint, to the authorities alleging disrespectful content is all it takes to trigger action.
Ms Stirling mentioned that Mr Ballentines parents were worried because they hadn't received any news from him leading them to fear the worst had happened.
She mentioned that they have encouraged Ms O'Neill to advocate for Mr Ballentine since she's his local MLA.
"Craig has to head home and start working soon " she expressed, expressing her concern about how petty criminal complaints were causing unnecessary trouble for visitors, in the system.
"We contacted Craigs representative in the area named Michelle O'Neill to ask her to reach out to the ambassador of the UAE and the FCDO, for discussions."
"We're optimistic that she can provide support to the assistance Ireland offered in bringing Torie Towey back home."
