New Grounds for Nuclear Weapons Use: From Conventional to WMD Threats

Russia is now allowed to employ weapons not only as a reaction to the use of weapons of mass destruction but also in response, to conventional weaponry.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has given the light to a revised nuclear strategy for Russia via a presidential decree on Tuesday as per details on the official legal site dated November 19th. The document named "Approval of the Core Principles of State Policy in Russias Nuclear Deterrence Field" states that any act of aggression by a member nation of an alliance against Russia or its partners will be seen as aggression, by the entire alliance. If a non nuclear state receives support from a power and engages in aggression, towards Russias interests or territories Russia will interpret it as a combined assault.

Russia has the ability to utilize weapons not just in reaction to the deployment of weapons of mass destruction but also in response to conventional weaponry if there is a significant threat, to Russias sovereignty or territorial integrity or that of its allies.

Air and Space Threats: Conditions for a Nuclear Response

If theres intel on the initiation of air and space attack systems aimed at Russia – encompassing both strategic and tactical aviation as well, as cruise missiles and other aerial weapons – a nuclear retaliation might be imminent.

Furthermore Russia could potentially resort to employing armaments in retaliation to the utilization of ballistic missiles, against its interests.

How Russia’s Policy Targets NATO and Non-Nuclear States

In September of year Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov mentioned that Russia was planning to update its nuclear strategy after analyzing recent conflicts and what they perceive as provocative actions from the West in relation to the Kremlins involvement in the conflict, with Ukraine.

It was later revealed that Putin had indeed chosen to broaden the circumstances in which nuclear weapons could be utilized.
