Ambros and Ruvkun Receive Nobel Prize for Groundbreaking Work on MicroRNA
The recipients of the 2024 Nobel Prize, in Medicine and Physiology have been officially revealed.
On October 7th this year the Nobel Committee revealed the winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology as Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their groundbreaking work on tiny molecules that control gene activity once they are activated according to information from the Nobel Foundations press release Their research is shedding new light, on how cells function and how organisms develop.
This years award was presented to two scientists who uncovered molecules that control gene functions in a way similar to an instructional guide, for our bodys cells operations and activities. All cells have matching chromosomes which house the genes and directives.
Yet muscle and nerve cells exhibit features from one another which prompts the inquiry into the origin of these variations; this is where gene regulation plays a pivotal role by enabling each cell to discern and execute only the relevant directives to ensure specific gene activation tailored to each cell type.
The researchers concentrated on studying the development of cell types and found microRNA. A novel category of minute RNA molecules that have significant involvement, in regulating genes.
Revolutionizing Gene Regulation: The Discovery of MicroRNA
This breakthrough unveiled a new aspect of genetic control highlighting the vital role of microRNAs, in the growth and operation of living beings.
The Nobel Prize has been given out every year starting from 1901 to recognize accomplishments in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and endeavors towards promoting peace. Additionally since 1969 the Swedish Central Bank Prize in Economic Sciences, in Memory of Alfred Nobel has also been presented.
