Colombo: The Sri Lanka Navy has detained 18 Indian fishermen accused of unauthorized fishing in the country's territorial waters and confiscated their fishing trawler. The arrests were made on Monday during a special operation carried out by the navy in the northern Vettilaikerni area. Following the operation, the fishermen and their vessel were handed over to fisheries authorities for further proceedings, according to a statement from the navy.

This latest incident brings the total number of Indian fishermen detained this year to 515, with 66 fishing trawlers also being seized, the navy reported. In November, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha held discussions emphasizing the need for a sustainable resolution to the persistent fishing disputes between the two countries.
