Downing Street for replacing Tulip Siddiq
Senior allies of British prime minister and labour party leader Keir Starmer are considering replacing Tulip Siddiq, the niece of ousted Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina and daughter of Hasina's youngest sister, Sheikh Rehana, if she is forced to quit over links to her aunt's ousted Bangladeshi regime, reports The Times.
Tulip, the incumbent Treasury minister, has referred herself to the prime minister's ethics watchdog over links to her aunt.
According to the report, officials are said to have identified candidates to succeed the Treasury minister over the weekend, before the public announcement that Siddiq had referred herself to the prime minister's ethics watchdog was made on Monday.
Starmer has said he has full confidence in Siddiq, and a No 10 spokesman said it was 'completely untrue' to suggest the party had drawn up a shortlist. But The Times has been told some of those close to the prime minister are at least informally considering who could succeed her, adds the report available online.
Earlier, the British newspaper The Financial Times reported that British city minister Tulip Siddiq was given a central London apartment by a person linked to the Awami League, led by the ousted prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.
Besides, The Telegraph reported that Tulip Siddiq lived in a second property reportedly given to her family by an ally of her aunt Hasina.
