Amazon Denies Plan to Show Tariff Costs, Citing Misinformation

Amazon denied the Punchbowl News report which stated the company would show price adjustments from tariffs specifically for items under President Trump’s 145% Chinese import tariffs. The Amazon Haul team evaluated the idea of import charges but never received approval from Tim Doyle according to the spokesperson. According to Engadget he stated that this situation will not occur. The denial came after Trump's criticism through Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt who labeled the supposed plan as "hostile and political" because of Amazon's historical connections to China.
Amazon refrains from showing costs to its customers because it wants to protect their trust even though Temu and Shein directly display 145% import charges and price-embedded tariffs. The Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt promoted American purchases while Trump allegedly phoned Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to express his disapproval. The tariffs imposed on Temu and Shein have resulted in price increases reaching 377% while Amazon faces similar pricing challenges because most of its Chinese products come from domestic sources.
Amazon revealed its July Prime Day event but the ongoing tariff situation might decrease customer savings because some vendors have decided to exit the market. CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood observed that companies remain hesitant to change prices because they expect future price increases if tariff policies continue. The company maintains its competitive pricing strategy through this unstable trade environment by keeping pricing information from customers.
