EU Warns of Retaliation as Trump Tariff Deadline Looms

The European Union issued a warning about implementing countermeasures against President Donald Trump's planned steep tariffs on EU goods which are set to begin on August 1. The EU issued this warning because Brussels officials remain dissatisfied with the ongoing trade negotiations with Washington.

During his Monday press conference Trump indicated that EU officials would visit the United States for discussions. “They’d like to talk,” he told reporters. During the weekend Trump declared his intention to impose 30% tariffs on EU and Mexican imports which intensified the existing trade dispute that also involves Japan and South Korea.

The Brussels meeting of EU foreign ministers saw increasing backing for retaliatory measures. Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described the threat as "absolutely unacceptable" while EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic stated that the bloc continues talks but has reached a point of exhaustion.

The Foreign Minister of Italy Antonio Tajani announced that a €21 billion tariff package targeting U.S. exports stands prepared for implementation if necessary. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum maintained a positive outlook about security negotiations with Washington because she believes they will produce a deal before the deadline.

The EU and U.S. maintain their positions as each other's primary trading partners yet additional tariff increases threaten to destroy the current peace and create worldwide trade disruptions and economic instability across automotive and agricultural sectors.
