GMDA to enhance water supply and upgrade drainage system, says CEO Misra

Gurugram, March 13 (IANS): The CEO of GMDA Shyamal Misra chaired a high level meeting on Thursday with the officials of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) to improve the inter departmental coordination of the crucial urban infrastructure issues.
Improvement in Water Supply
To ensure that there is enough water supply during the summer, MCG was told to replace and put into service inactive boosting stations for even distribution. The authorities were also told to disconnect all illegal connections from the MCG pipelines to avoid the supply being diverted to other unwanted areas.
Misra called for the creation of a joint task force of GMDA and MCG officers to identify the crucial areas and make sure that the boosting stations are made functional and only legitimate water connections are established. MCG will also control water distribution in unauthorized colonies and measures for infrastructure development will be taken to avoid the consumption of potable water.
Improvements in Drainage and Sewerage Systems
The Infra 2 division reported that some of the internal drains need to be cleaned and should be connected to the main stormwater drain of GMDA. Due to poor drainage, stormwater from sector roads are seen to overflow into the main roads and cause floods. In this regard, Misra ordered the officials to clean and connect the internal drains to master drains, and also to lay additional drainage pipes where necessary to avoid water logging.
Other issues include garbage being dumped into drains along the National Highway. MCG was told to ensure that wastes are collected on a regular basis and other sanitation measures are taken to avoid clogging of drains particularly during the rainy season. Likewise, very strict measures were also put in place to ensure that the wastes that are to be collected after the sanitation exercise is not to be deposited in the surface drains developed by GMDA or road gullies.
Also, the cleanliness of the underpasses in the city was also made to be regular. Furthermore, GMDA was told to get 49.93 acres of land from MCG in Sector 107 to build sewage treatment plants and thus enhance the sewerage system of Gurugram.
