GOP Divided as Trump’s Tax Bill Returns to House
July 2nd, 2025

The U.S. House of Representatives will receive President Donald Trump's broad tax-and-spending bill on Wednesday which reveals major Republican Party disagreements before the July 4 deadline.

The Senate approved the legislation through Vice President JD Vance's tiebreaking vote on Tuesday. The proposed legislation would increase national debt by $3.4 trillion throughout the next decade because it extends tax breaks while increasing defense and immigration spending. The proposed Medicaid budget reductions have sparked widespread opposition from various groups.

House Speaker Mike Johnson declared his intention to speedily pass the bill which he named the “One Big Beautiful Bill” because it represents the core of Trump's America First agenda. The bill faces potential failure because of internal Republican disagreements. The Rules Committee approved the bill by a single vote after two Republican members voted against it during the overnight session.

House Speaker Johnson needs only three Republican defections to pass the bill because his party controls the chamber with 220-212 seats. The severe weather conditions that affected lawmakers' ability to reach Washington created additional challenges for the crucial vote.

House Republicans support Trump's main objectives but the massive size and expensive nature of this bill creates challenges for party cohesion. The result will determine both Trump's future legislative accomplishments and Republican Party control of Congress during the 2026 elections.
