March 24th, 2025

This is an 8.5 percent increase from January 2024 when only 144,405 TEUs were handled at the port.

Bryan Brandes, the Maritime Director of the Port of Oakland, commented: “Strong import growth indicates the continued economic importance of Northern California and the confidence of cargo owners in our hub.”

Export levels remain constant indicating strong worldwide demand for US farm and factory products.

Loading of imports also increased in January 2025 by 13%, with 81,453 TEUs being handled compared to 72,081 TEUs in January 2024. Loaded exports grew at a slower pace but still increased by 3.4%, with 64,735 TEUs handled in January 2025, up from 62,596 TEUs in the same month last year. However, empty exports increased by 19.8% and began to pick up again. The port handled 34,363 TEUs in January 2025, which is above the 28,694 TEUs handled in January 2024, which shows positive movement in the outbound direction.
