Rahul Gandhi on Trump’s tariffs: ‘They’ll wreck India’s economy.’
April 3rd, 2025

Rahul Gandhi attacked Donald Trump's new tariffs which he stated would completely devastate India's economy by damaging its automotive and pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. During his Lok Sabha speech on Thursday he demanded to know what the government was doing about the 26% tariff imposed by their ally. He criticized China for occupying 4,000 square kilometers of Indian territory while he questioned the Modi government's reaction to this situation. He demanded to know what was happening to the country's territorial boundaries as he mentioned the 2020 Galwan clash that resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers.

Trump introduced these tariffs on Wednesday by stating that the United States had been cheated by countries including India. The official documents reveal that the actual rate amounts to 27% even though the announcement stated 26%. The Indian commerce ministry works to understand the effects while it consults businesses and exporters to measure the damage while developing plans for a developed India. Gandhi attacked the government's China ties during the 75th anniversary of Chinese diplomacy by showing a "shocking" photo of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri sharing cake with the Chinese ambassador. He demanded the restoration of the original status quo before China can celebrate.

The opposition leader Gandhi revealed that he learned about the letters from PM Modi and President Murmu to China through the Chinese ambassador instead of getting the information from Indian channels. “Why aren’t we in the loop?” he asked, per ANI. He linked his foreign policy assessment to a wider analysis of BJP and RSS versus Congress foreign relations. Indira Gandhi maintained her Indian dignity when asked to choose between left or right political leanings. The BJP and RSS show complete submission to every foreign visitor according to his criticism.

The new tariffs from Trump under his "reciprocal" strategy have created economic worries for India but some experts believe internal market strength could reduce the impact. The attack from Gandhi unites Indian concerns about borders with trade issues which forces Modi to make difficult decisions for New Delhi.
