Starmer Secures Key UK-US Tariff Deal, Boosting Trade
May 8th, 2025

The UK achieved a major trade victory through its US tariff reduction deal which Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced shortly after the UK-India free trade agreement. The Thursday announcement revealed that the US would grant exemptions from Trump's 25% tariffs on UK steel and aluminum and cars but would keep a 10% baseline tariff in place. The agreement between President Trump and the UK represents a "major trade deal" which concentrates on particular products instead of establishing a full free trade agreement that needs Congressional approval. The agreement provides a 100,000-vehicle quota that will reduce UK auto tariffs to 10% and supports £9 billion in car exports together with £700 million in steel and aluminum exports. The United States wants to obtain improved market access for pharmaceuticals and technology products. The trade agreement strengthens Starmer's political position because it demonstrates his skill in handling Trump's unpredictable trade methods despite Labour's recent electoral losses. The Liberal Democrats and other critics require parliamentary oversight to verify that the agreement safeguards both the NHS and farming industries. The UK's close relationship with Trump creates additional trade possibilities which strengthen their bilateral connection because the US continues to be the UK's leading trading partner.
