June 11th, 2025

President Trump announced on Wednesday that China would supply the United States with essential rare earth minerals in exchange for increased Chinese student enrollment at American colleges.

Through his Truth Social platform Trump announced: “WE ARE GETTING A TOTAL OF 55% TARIFFS, CHINA IS GETTING 10%. RELATIONSHIP IS EXCELLENT!” The White House announced that the United States would impose a 55% tariff on Chinese imports which included a basic 10% duty and additional fees for fentanyl trafficking and existing tariffs.

The agreement requires both Trump and Jinping to provide their approval before it becomes official. The United States and China announced on Tuesday that they had established a framework to restore their trade truce and lift restrictions on Chinese rare earth exports although the complete agreement remains undisclosed.

The announcement emerged during a time when officials attempted to reduce rising trade tensions which caused market instability and economic concerns.
