Washington Post Teams Up with OpenAI to Integrate Content into ChatGPT
April 22nd, 2025

The Washington Post formed a collaboration with OpenAI to enable users to access their journalistic content through ChatGPT. The agreement between The Post and OpenAI enables ChatGPT users to receive Washington Post article summaries and quotes along with direct links to the articles during web searches.

The Post's head of global partnerships Peter Elkins-Williams stated that the outlet continues to focus on delivering content through preferred platforms of its audience. The organization remains dedicated to meeting its readers at their preferred locations according to his statement. Through this partnership users of ChatGPT will have access to our important news stories while we fulfill our goal of delivering content at any time and through any platform our readers choose.

The Washington Post began using generative AI to summarize articles starting from November. Users can now access ChatGPT Search freely from February 1 without needing to create an account. The Post owner Jeff Bezos revealed during his February announcement that the publication would direct its daily opinion pieces toward protecting individual freedoms and free market principles. The OpenAI partnership matches The Post's strategic direction because of its AI-focused approach and Amazon's substantial AI investments.

OpenAI continues to expand its news publisher partnerships through more than 20 global agreements. The media industry has moved from initial opposition to AI integration as seen with The New York Times to now embrace this trend with multiple news publishers.
