Xiaomi Eyes Global EV Expansion Starting in 2027
July 2nd, 2025

Xiaomi Corp. announced through CEO Lei Jun during a Wednesday livestream that the company will start selling electric vehicles outside China during 2027.

Xiaomi launched its electric vehicle sector with the SU7 sedan model in 2024. The company introduced electric vehicles to its product line through the SU7 sedan which marked a significant expansion of its business beyond mobile devices. The company had previously suggested 2027 as the potential start year for international EV sales but Lei Jun's statement provides the most direct confirmation of this plan.

The company waits to enter global markets because it needs to increase production while improving technology and meeting foreign regulatory requirements. The company's decision to delay global expansion stems from the intense competition in China's domestic EV market where BYD and Nio fight for market share through price competition and government subsidies.

The global expansion of Xiaomi's automotive division would establish the company as a direct competitor to traditional automakers and Tesla. The company's existing international consumer electronics presence will support its EV market entry in Southeast Asia and Europe because these regions show increasing interest in affordable electric vehicles.
