JetZero based in Long Beach California operates from PTI in Greensboro North Carolina as the company explores constructing a major production facility that will generate employment opportunities exceeding 10,000 workers. The aviation company behind the fuel-efficient blended-wing-body aircraft picked PTI among five U.S. airports as one of its finalists and will announce its selection within weeks. The Z4 aircraft model from JetZero provides 250 seats while consuming half the fuel of typical planes and achieves a 5,000-nautical-mile flight distance. United Airlines’ purchase of 100 planes supports this project that could establish Greensboro as a significant aerospace production center.

JetZero becomes the latest company to establish operations at PTI where Boom Supersonic opened its $500 million “superfactory” in 2022 to employ hundreds of workers. PTI currently hosts HondaJet Marshall Aerospace and FedEx and demonstrates the expansion of its aerotropolis. JetZero would establish itself as one of North Carolina's biggest economic development projects which would match Toyota's $5.9 billion Liberty battery plant and its associated $225-$271.4 million state incentives. The current incentives for JetZero at the state and local levels remain undetermined although state departments along with Greensboro and Guilford County typically provide substantial financial backing to such projects.

The Z4 model combines NASA FAA and U.S. Air Force cooperation to create an all-wing design inspired by stingrays which generates superior lift and drag reduction. The company plans its first flight tests for 2027 before starting commercial services in 2030 with Delta and Alaska Airlines as potential clients. Local ties include engine contracts with Collins Aerospace in Winston-Salem and Pratt & Whitney in Asheville. According to John Boyd from The Boyd Co. the Triad region benefits from its professional workforce and Guilford Community College training programs and established supplier networks which position it better than inflation-prone Sunbelt areas like Florida and Texas.

However, challenges loom. The upcoming 2025-26 budget of the N.C. Senate does not provide funding for major projects while the recruitment of 10,000 workers might put pressure on the local labor pool. Boyd explained that the region stands out because of its lower operating costs while the aviation sector tends to cluster its operations which Boom and HondaJet have already demonstrated. The establishment of JetZero’s plant at PTI would attract substantial population growth and economic development which would solidify the airport's position as a leading aviation hub.
