Local author-illustrator duo show there is no one way to be
THUNDER BAY. A group of friends who have known each other for a time collaborated to release a book promoting the idea that there are many paths, to being oneself.
Local author Jennifer Barrows book "Of Tigers and Teddy Bears " beautifully illustrated by local artist Laura Paxton hit the shelves in October.
Barrow mentioned that her family and the diverse individuals she interacts with at work are a source of inspiration, for her.
As a hairstylist who interacts with individuals regularly it got me thinking about not categorizing anyone rigidly but rather embracing both our powerful and gentle aspects.
"They tend to swap roles It's important to always stay true, to yourself and embrace your unique identity without conforming to expectations or norms We believe that there are countless ways to approach work leisure and family life
Barrow emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself. Reassured that support is always available, by recognizing the Tigers and Teddy Bear symbol as a sign of assistance.
"I've been sketching for long as I can remember " shared Paxton the artist, behind the drawings of tigers and teddy bears.
"When Jenn shared her manuscript with me and we discussed the story together. I could immediately start visualizing ideas. Our approach involved starting with the concept from the logo and developing a character to match it followed by presenting styles, for Jenns consideration."
"We then moved on to select a color scheme that we genuinely enjoyed. And things developed from that point organically " shared Paxton reflecting on the collaborative and enjoyable journey of exploring a fresh creative avenue with the team."
Barrow found it intriguing to review everything.
"I need to share an idea, with my artists in a way that resonates with them and captures the essence of it perfectly – Laura really grasped it without any confusion."
"It all began with a concept – nearly two years have passed since then; however its been a full year of dedicated effort, towards nurturing this creative endeavor."
Barrow mentioned that the intention was not to single out any individual; rather it is up, to each persons interpretation of the book.
Barrow and Paxton have been friends, for a time and first became acquainted in kindergarten.
Jennifer and I have been friends ever since junior and senior kindergarten.
When she asked me to illustrate her book it was a decision. We connected right away through our shared creativity and that has been a key part of our relationship ever since.
Paxton mentioned that when we work together creatively as ourselves it simply felt like the choice, without much thought.
Barrow mentioned that her two daughters served as a source of inspiration for her each, with their own unique personalities that motivated her in different ways.
"One person shows compassion through her tiger while another displays strength, through her bear companion showcasing the beauty of their unique individualities as one exudes a softer presence and the other radiates a sense of resilience."
Barrow mentioned that there is an idea suggesting that individuals ought to behave in a manner.
"You never know how someone might change over time; we're constantly evolving."
"It's not an idea; rather it's a fresh perspective that simplifies the concept, for people of various ages to understand that change is normal and accepting different emotions is perfectly fine."
"I emphasized the importance of embracing your self and how your appearance can vary depending upon the individual " she remarked.
"According to Barrows advice; Be kind and honest, with yourself. Make an effort to see things from others perspectives."
When the day comes to a close we must ensure that kindness guides us leading with compassion and courage each unique in its way, for all.
"I enjoy connecting with others and spending time just observing and engaging with people."
Barrow expressed that sharing her thoughts with others and allowing them to interpret them can make her feel exposed and vulnerable.
"I'm so pleased with how its being received just as I had envisioned it would be! I'm thrilled with the outcome and feeling proud of our effort, in this endeavor."
Barrow expressed joy in the fact that his daughters were able to witness him stepping out of his comfort zone, which brought him happiness.
Paxton shared that being involved in, behind the scenes tasks and witnessing everything come together truly fills her heart with joy.
"Tigers and Teddy Bears can be found as an eBook on Apple Books, Kindle and Google Books. Is also stocked at Entershine Bookshop, in town. You can also borrow it from the Thunder Bay and Murillo Libraries in formats."
