Apple Plans to Shift iPhone Sourcing Away from China Amid Tariff Wars
April 25th, 2025

The Financial Times reports Apple will relocate entire iPhone manufacturing for US sales from China to India by 2026 according to their sources. The purpose behind this relocation is to avoid Trump administration tariffs that apply 145% duties on Chinese goods while they create market instability. The US market will require Apple to expand its Indian iPhone manufacturing capacity by 100% since it currently meets 10% of US demand according to Bank of America forecasts thus ending its twenty-year dependence on Chinese manufacturers including Foxconn.

Apple has not provided any official statement about this matter. The production shift demonstrates the difficulties which arise when companies try to keep costs stable during trade disputes. The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration expose Apple as the most vulnerable US tech company because 90% of its iPhones originate from Chinese manufacturing sites according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

Apple did not provide any immediate statements about their business. The manufacturing industry faces difficulties because of how trade disputes affect cost structures. The UBS analysts indicated that iPhone sales remained robust during March and April because customers purchased devices in anticipation of rising prices from tariff impacts yet forecast declining sales through 2026 because of economic instability.

The United States maintains India as a primary trading partner after placing a 26% tariff on that nation which has since been suspended. The U.S. Vice President JD Vance expressed positive outcomes regarding trade and economic relations during his recent summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The upcoming transition of Apple production to India will help both countries strengthen their economic ties and protect against future tariffs. The growth of Indian manufacturing operations requires substantial funds and construction of new facilities which presents substantial operational difficulties. A successful transformation would modify Apple’s worldwide manufacturing operations by decreasing their dependence on China while following political developments yet success depends on mastering complicated trade systems and maintaining market consumer interest.
